Washington, D.C - Obong Eyi Umana was named the new National President of the Akwa Ibom State Association this month during the 21st annual convention. D.C., an ideal location for election of the organizations highest office, was host city to the event, which drew an estimate 2,000 attendees. The annual convention was attended by several distinguished guest, including his Excellency, Akwa Ibom State Executive Governor, Obong Godswill Obot Akpabio. Obong Umana succeeds former President, Chief Monday Affiah of North Carolina, and is the first person ever to serve in this capacity from the Michigan Chapter.
Thirty-one delegates, representing twenty-two chapters across the United States voted in the election process. Running under the platform of “Unite, Execute, Reform,” Umana was able to secure 50% of the votes, placing him in the lead against two additional nominees from Atlanta and Washington DC chapters respectively. As he describes these contenders, “…fine candidates who ran a great race with me for the office of President, The Iron lady, my crown Princess, Akparawa Anwan Emem Isok-Nsuk; and the Honorable Akparawa Emmanuel Isong. I thank you for your services to our community, and invite you to join me in building an enduring and much improved Akwa Ibom State Association.”
Prior to this appointment, Umana held several prominent positions within Akwa Ibom State Association leadership. His extensive involvements include accomplishment at both the State and National level; Umana is a founding member and first President of the Michigan Chapter. At the National level, he has served as Chairman of the National Education and Youth Portfolio, Member & Secretary to the Academic Excellence Project Committee, Member of the Board of Trustees (BOT), Chairman of the Finance Committee, and Treasurer of the BOT.
Professionally, Umana is a leader in the automotive industry. Obong Umana is an electrical engineer and a recognized leader in product design and manufacturing innovations. At the Ford Motor Company, he has held positions of increasing responsibility, which include: Manufacturing Engineering, Product Development (Design & Release), Manufacturing Operations Management, Quality Operating Systems Deployment & Management, and Forward Models Launch & Business Planning.
Coined as the “New Era President,” Umana promises to completely reinvent the Akwa Ibom Association and to increase pride in the Akwa Ibom brand. He places emphasis on transparency, communication, and trust. Prior to being elected the president, he had already put together a dedicated and hard working executive team, and a detailed Manifesto containing objectives and expectations was released.
Akwaibomites around the United States are encouraged to become more involved with their local chapter and an invitation is extended for all to participate with the National Association.
